How to pass the K1 Visa interview
The last step in the K1 visa process is the fiance visa interview. To help prepare you, we have provided a description of the process and examples of typical interview questions.
Determination of Admissibility: Be Prepared
A consular officer at the U.S. Embassy will first see that all documentation is in order. The relationship will be examined thoroughly to determine its legitimacy. It is of the utmost importance that you and your fiance answer questions posed by the officer with honesty. While some questions posed to your fiance may sound basic, the purpose of these questions is to identify those relationships that would be considered fraudulent. This officer has the power to grant or deny your visa, and any suspicion of misrepresentation will not only result in denial of the visa, but could affect any future attempts at immigration to the U.S.
Typical Background Questions: Be Knowledgeable and Consistent
Make sure your fiance answers questions posed in accordance with previously filed evidence and/or new evidence brought to the interview. Many of the questions will be centered around:
Your fiance’s family background
Your fiance will also be asked to verify personal and biographical information (religion, employment, family background, children, etc.) of you, the petitioner.
Typical Relationship Questions: Remember the Priority is Matrimony
The officer will base questions such as these to your fiance in order to determine the legitimacy of a romantic relationship with the intent to marry:
How long you have known each other
Description of where, when, and how you and your fiance first met
Plans upon arrival in the United States
Reasons for wanting to be granted a visa to emigrate to the U.S.
Please note: This last question is typical of the kind of inquiry that an officer will use to determine the legitimacy of the relationship. Answers that desire for stress employment or other interests in the U.S. are indicators to the consular officer (“red flags”) that the top priority for gaining entrance to the U.S. is not the impending marriage. Counsel your fiance to be aware of questions like these and to remember that desire for marriage should be at the forefront of her/his answer.
Other “Red Flags” that Could Affect the Outcome of the Interview
Even if your fiance is thoroughly prepared, anxiety about the interview process can trigger an outwardly nervous response. Nervous behavior coupled with any inconsistencies in the facts of the case might appear to the officer as falsifying the facts of the case. While one cannot always control nervousness, honesty is always the best course for any memory lapses your fiance might have about the facts of the case.
